LANCASTER, Pa. – The Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center will host an Armed Forces Day event on Saturday, May 15 to provide vaccinations and resources to veterans and active members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the vaccination center, located at the former Bon-Ton department store in Park City Center in Lancaster. There will be free coffee and raffle prizes available throughout the day.
The Vaccinate Lancaster Coalition, which operates the vaccination center, is hosting the event in celebration of Armed Forces Day, which honors all those who serve in the six U.S. Military service branches – Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force.
“This is our way to celebrate the men and women in our community who so bravely serve our nation,” said Dr. Michael Ripchinski, site director for the Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center and chief clinical officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, lead healthcare partner for the Vaccinate Lancaster Coalition.
“We want to give them the same shot of hope that hundreds of thousands in our community have gotten,” he added. “They protect us; this is our opportunity to protect them – and their families.”
In addition to COVID-19 vaccinations, the event will also include a visit by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center, which offers direct counseling, outreach and care coordination to military veterans. The mobile center serves as an extension of the brick-and-mortar VA Vet Centers located throughout the country – including locally in Lancaster and Harrisburg.
The Lancaster County Community Vaccination Center has a special connection to the Armed Forces, as some 50 members of the Pa. National Guard have been volunteering at the center in both clinical and nonclinical roles. As part of the Armed Forces Day event, the National Guard will hold an awards ceremony to recognize those who’ve served onsite and coalition partners.
